CAMP: Approaching Behaviour from a Mental Health Perspective CAMP is focused on understanding the importance of belonging in reducing challenging behaviors and supporting mental health across the lifespan. In workshops, we will explore the CAMP approach, an effective framework for handling challenging behaviors from a mental health perspective. Belonging is a fundamental human need that plays a crucial role in our mental well-being. By addressing the underlying belonging needs behind behavior, we can create interventions that foster a strong sense of connection, control, and purpose. These interventions not only reduce challenging behaviors but also lay the foundation for lifelong mental health benefits. During a workshop, participants will learn how to implement the CAMP approach step-by-step. Workshops delve into each section of the coinciding CAMP workbook, providing practical strategies and tools for facilitators, including teachers, coaches, counselors, and behavior interventionists. Here's a glimpse of what you can expect: Communicate: Open the door for effective communication with students or their parents/guardians. Learn how to validate their challenges and create a safe space for dialogue that promotes understanding and empathy. Assess Needs: Dive into the unmet belonging needs of students, focusing on connection, control, and purpose. Explore the importance of these needs and gain skills in assessing and understanding them through open-ended questions and observations. Mine for Implications: Discover the strengths and passions of students and explore how challenging behaviors hinder their utilization. Learn to ask curious questions and actively listen, identifying the implications of behaviors on their sense of purpose and well-being. Propose Interventions: Develop realistic and effective interventions that address the unmet belonging needs. Explore a range of strategies that enhance connection, control, and purpose, such as employing existing strengths, fostering teamwork, and promoting autonomy. Camp Rhino is the name of overnight camps and day camps in Canada for immigrant and refugee young people ages 9-18. These are Christian camps, generally running 5 to 7 days during the months of July and August, that are operated in partnership with churches and charitable organizations. Camp Rhino camps do not own their own camp facilities but rent the facilities of other camp operations. Daily activities include swimming, canoeing, gym and field sports, boating, wall climbing, Bible teaching, and campfires. The camps are staffed by volunteers who must have police checks and appropriate training. Most of the camp fees are raised by other charities, permitting any immigrant/refugee child of any faith background to join our camps.
