The Bucket System is a wealth management strategy in which savings are set aside in metaphorical buckets. Each bucket contains a specific amount of cash and uses a unique investment strategy. The number of buckets usually ranges between three and five. The first bucket will be invested in the money market, the second bucket will be invested in bonds, and each bucket becomes a slightly riskier investment. These relatively safe investments are used to counteract inflation and supply the necessary retirement income as shown in the Financial Plan. This strategy ensures that clients will not be drawing income from investments that would be adversely affected by down markets. When retirement occurs, bucket one becomes the first year's retirement income, then the cash in bucket two will move to bucket one, and the cash from bucket three will move over to replace to fill bucket two. This scenario only happens in a longer market downturn. Otherwise the increasing value of the large Magic Bucket (a large metaphorical bucket which holds invested retirement savings) is skimmed off into the first year bucket.
